Howard L. Wheeler, II started Chris-Tel Construction in 1989, after spending time working for his father and grandfather learning the construction industry. At first, Chris-Tel’s work centered on high-end residential and commercial renovations. In 1991, Donnie Singleton joined the firm as a partner and together they changed the size, scope and direction of construction projects.
Throughout the 1990’s, the company grew steadily, focusing on moderate sized ($5-$10 million) projects including schools and various renovation projects. Successful, on-time, on-budget completion of municipal, industrial and commercial projects consistently led to new and larger buildings.
By the turn of the century, based on Chris-Tel Construction’s reputation for quality and reliability, the firm entered into multiple continuing services contracts with municipal agencies and educational institutions. One project of note, the Edison & Ford Winter Estates historic restoration projects, spanned ten years and encompassed restoration of all of the buildings on the Estates. This project won five individual historic restoration awards including one from the National Trust for Historic Preservation for Excellence in the Stewardship of Historic Sites.
Many other awards followed including commercial, industrial, historic, and LEED projects, recognizing Chris-Tel Construction as a high quality, highly trusted cornerstone of the local building community. By 2013, Chris-Tel’s growing reputation for excellence and efficiency led to a major company expansion with the addition of several larger scale vertical projects including improvements to Hammond Stadium at Century Link Sports Complex, the construction of the award winning projects, the North Fort Myers Recreation Center and Eastern Metal Supply, resulting in over a half million square feet of restoration and new construction. Recently, Chris-Tel won a large scale transportation infrastructure project, the Estero Blvd Improvements to Fort Myers Beach, scheduled for completion in 2020.
